From Unity to Difference: Time in Systems Theory

Time is a central aspect in social theory, and especially sociological systems theory is a rich source for different approaches to time as a social dimension. In my talk I will compare two perspectives on time Niklas Luhmann develops on distinct theoretical levels: Time as a series of events as described in his writings on social systems and the coding of communication; and time in social evolution, which is a perspective then also applied to the "modern" society. I will focus on the role time plays in performing a differentiation, which then allows a discussion of the time-related premises of Luhmanns thesis of the functional differentiation of "modern" society.

How to Think about Persistence-Conditions

In Contemporary Metaphysics two conceptions of persistence-conditions can be distinguished: The Identity-Conception and the Unity-Conception as they might be called. According to the former, persistence-conditions are conditions of the (diachronic) identity of objects. According to the latter, they are conditions of the (temporal) unity of objects. It will, first, be argued that both conceptions are inadequate for principled reasons. Then, an alternative conception will be presented that avoids the inadequacies of the former. According to this Continuity-Conception, persistence-conditions are conditions of the continuing existence of an already existing object. This conception, it will be concluded, should change our way of thinking about the problem of persistence.

Aristotle on the Continuity of Change

The aim of the talk is to develop an interpretation of Aristotle’s account of the continuity of change in Physics VI, 1. To capture these two different ways, contemporary philosophers distinguish between events and processes. I will begin by briefly presenting this distinction and then suggest that Aristotle’s understanding of change is best understood as a process. I will then sketch out Aristotle’s account of the continuity of change.
